Unveiling the Keys to Optimal Performance: Insights from "The Attributes" by Rich Diviney

Mar 12, 2024

Introduction:
Welcome to the Dead Three Leadership and Coaching Show. I am your host, George Evjen, and today, we're going to get right into it with a bunch of different things that we need to cover. If you've listened to our podcast on the last week, we dove into a book by Rich Deviney called "The Attributes 25: Drivers of Optimal Performance". I've read this book twice, and there's a lot of great takeaways from it. Last time, we covered a fair amount of the first third of the book.

Graham Cochran's 52-Book Challenge:
As I was prepping for this episode, I couldn't help but draw parallels with Graham Cochran's 52-book challenge for 2024. Graham, known for his expertise in personal development and entrepreneurship, embarked on a journey to read 52 books in a year. His dedication to knowledge and growth inspired me, aligning perfectly with our mission here on the Dead Three Show.

Rich Deviney and "The Attributes":
Rich Deviney's book, "The Attributes", resonates deeply with me. As someone fascinated by military history and leadership, Deviney's insights into the hidden drivers of optimal performance are invaluable. While many are familiar with Jocko Willink and his emphasis on extreme ownership, Deviney offers a nuanced perspective on attributes crucial for success.

The Grit Attributes:
In "The Attributes", Deviney breaks down 25 attributes into four buckets, with the first being grit. Grit comprises courage, perseverance, adaptability, and resilience. Courage, in particular, stands out as a crucial component in overcoming fear and pushing past obstacles. It's a choice, a decision we make, and one that is often rewarded with growth and progress.

Understanding Resilience:
Resilience, as defined by Deviney, is the ability to rapidly return to one's baseline emotional and mental state after a stressful, traumatic, or triumphant event. Think of it as your internal thermostat. How quickly can you bounce back when life knocks you down? Highly resilient individuals can genuinely return to their baseline, healing the damage caused by setbacks and challenges.

The Importance of Courage and Resilience:
Courage and resilience go hand in hand. Courage is about facing fear head-on, while resilience is about bouncing back when fear knocks you down. It's essential to recognize that setbacks are inevitable, whether in sports, business, or personal life. What sets individuals apart is their ability to rise above these setbacks, to laugh at themselves, and to get back into the game with renewed determination.

Conclusion:
As we continue to explore "The Attributes" and other impactful books, let's remember the importance of courage, perseverance, adaptability, and resilience. These hidden attributes are not just words on a page; they are guiding principles for personal and professional growth. Let's embrace them, apply them, and empower ourselves and those around us to reach new heights of success.

Key Takeaways:

Grit Attributes: Courage, perseverance, adaptability, and resilience form the foundation of optimal performance.
Courage and Resilience: Courage is the choice to face fear, while resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks.
Internal Thermostat: Resilience is akin to your internal thermostat, determining how quickly you return to your baseline after challenges.
Setbacks Are Inevitable: Recognize that setbacks are a part of life, but your response to them can make all the difference.
Empowerment Through Attributes: Embrace and apply these attributes to empower yourself and those around you to achieve success.

As we navigate the complexities of life and leadership, let's keep these attributes in mind, striving always to push past fear, bounce back from setbacks, and empower ourselves and others to reach new levels of excellence. Thank you for joining me on this journey of growth and discovery.
